According to the Code No. 6458 on Foreigners and International Protection, a residence permit refers to a permit issued to foreign nationals to stay in Türkiye. The term foreign consists of people who are not bound with citizenship to the Republic of Türkiye.
The residence permit, issued by the competent authorities, grants the foreigner the right to live in our country for a certain period of time and in a certain place.
Student’s residence permit is regulated in the Articles 38 to 41 of the Code No. 6458 on Foreigners and International Protection. Accordingly, the “student residence permit” is issued to foreigners who will receive associate, undergraduate, graduate, doctorate, Medical Specialization Training, and Dentistry Specialization Training at a higher education institution in Türkiye.
Under certain conditions, it is possible for student residence permit holders to work legally in Türkiye and earn a wage income. Associate, undergraduate, graduate and doctorate students receiving formal education in Türkiye can work provided that they obtain a work permit.
However, the right to work for associate and undergraduate students begins after the first year of their education.
Work permit applications for foreigners who are studying at Turkish educational institutions must be made to the Ministry of Labour and Social Security. Work Permit applications are evaluated according to general rules.
