Minimum Wages for Trainees and Interns in Turkey

As it is known, the Presidential Decision No. 5063 is being published in the Turkish Official Gazette dated 5th of January 2022 and numbered 31710 determined the wages to be paid to interns and the amount of government support to be given to the enterprises employing internees.

With the decision, the wages of candidate apprentices, apprentices and students who receive vocational training in enterprises who continue their internship or supplementary education, were being determined, and at the same time, regulations regarding the amount and duration of state contribution payments are being envisaged.

  • According to the Vocational Education Law No. 3308, it has been decided that the payments to be made to candidate apprentices, apprentices and students who receive vocational training in enterprises, who continue their internship or supplementary education cannot be less than 30% of the net amount of the monthly minimum wage.
  • The payments to be made to the 12th grade students of the vocational training centres who have earned the journeyman qualification cannot be less than 50% of the gross minimum wage.
  • With the decision taken by Turkish Higher Education Board, 35 percent of the net minimum wage must be paid for the students of the Faculty of Science and Engineering.

A certain part of the minimum wage that can be paid to students studying at schools and institutions other than the vocational education centre program is covered by the state in support of employers. Accordingly, two-thirds of the wages paid for enterprises employing less than twenty personnel, and one-third of the wage paid for enterprises employing twenty or more personnel; The entire fee paid to the students who continue the vocational training centre program will be paid to the employers as a support.

With the decision of the Minimum Wage Determination Commission published in the Turkish Official Gazette dated 1 July 2022 and repeated issues numbered 31883, the minimum wage to be applied for the period 01.07.2022-31.12.2022 is being determined.

The Minimum Wage Determination Commission has determined the minimum wage as gross TRL 6,471.00 and as net 5,500.35 as of July 2022. In this regard, the net minimum wage increased by 29.32 percent.

After the new increase, the minimum intern wage levels will be as in the table below:
