Rights Provided from Maternity Insurance in Turkey

Maternity insurance constitutes one of the branches of social insurance that is legally being implemented in Turkey.

In-line with the Act No. 5510, starting from the date of pregnancy of the insured woman subject to 4/a and 4/b social insurance statuses, or of the non-insured spouse of the insured man, of the woman receiving income or pension due to her own work, or of the non-insured spouse of the man receiving income or pension;

  • The first eight weeks after birth,
  • In case of multiple pregnancy, the first ten weeks after birth,

are being considered as maternity and these periods are being covered by the Maternity Insurance Status.

 

Who are covered by Maternity Insurance?

The following employee groups are within the scope of the Maternity Insurance in Turkey:

  • Insured persons subject to 4/a social insurance status,
  • Insured persons subject to 4/b social insurance status,
  • Convicts and detainees working in Penal Institutions and Detention Houses,
  • Turkish workers who are taken to work in workplaces abroad by employers undertaking work in countries without social security agreements,
  • Among those working in domestic services, the number of working days calculated according to the working hours in a month is 10 days or more.

What are the rights provided by maternity insurance?

From maternity insurance to the insured the following benefits are being provided:

  • Temporary disability allowance,
  • Breastfeeding allowance.

 

What is Temporary Disability Allowance?

Temporary incapacity for work is being defined as the temporary inability of the insured to work during the rest period specified in the reports of the physician or medical board authorized by the Social Security Institution in cases of work accident, occupational disease, illness and maternity.

In addition, the term “Temporary Disabililty Allowance” is the financial aid paid by the Social Security Institution to the insured who is on leave from work due to work accident, occupational disease, sickness and maternity insurance branches for the days he/she remains on leave.

 

How Much Are Temporary Incapacity Payments?

Temporary disability allowance is given to the following employee groups:

  • Employees subject to 4/a social insurance status,
  • Village and neighborhood headmen,
  • Social insured being a real or simple income tax payer due to commercial income or self-employment income,
  • Social insured being exempt from income tax and registered in the tradesmen and craftsmen registry,
  • Social insured who are being engaged in agricultural activities,

In case of maternity, for each day that the insured woman does not work during the eight weeks before and after birth, and in case of multiple pregnancy, two weeks are added to the eight weeks before birth is within the scope of the temporary incapacity benefit.

In case of premature birth, for the periods that cannot be used before the birth, and for the periods added to the postpartum rest period, if the patient works until three weeks before the birth upon request and with the approval of the physician, for the periods that the insured cannot be able to work are within the scope of the temporary incapacity benefit.

Temporary incapacity allowance from maternity insurance is not paid to female insured persons registered within the scope of company partner.

The temporary incapacity benefit to be given to the insured woman in case of maternity is half of her daily earnings in inpatient treatments and two-thirds in outpatient treatments.
